What's different about Universal Credit?

What is it managed migration?

Managed Migration is where people getting certain benefits will have their claims transferred
to Universal Credit.

What benefits does this affect?

Previously, it has only affected people who received just Working Tax Credits or Child Tax Credits.
From April 2024, people receiving Income Support, Income-based Jobseekers Allowance, Income
based Employment Support Allowance, Housing Benefit, Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit will
be invited to move onto Universal Credit.

What do I need to do?

Its important that you do not do anything until you receive a Managed Migration letter! The letter
will tell you the date that you need to make your claim by.

You will need to make your claim to Universal Credit before the date shown in your letter. If you
don’t, you risk your benefits stopping.

I think I will need help

When you receive your Migration notice, it will contain details of the UC Migration helpline which
you can call for free for help and advice on making your claim to UC. You can also visit your local Job
Centre and speak to the advisors there. And our friendly Money Matters team are here to help you,
contact us direct on 01952 217234 or email money.matters@wrekin.com

Will I get the same money on UC?

Yes - by moving to UC after you receive your Migration notice letter, you will receive ‘transitional
protection’, which means that your Universal Credit entitlement will be the same as your existing
benefit income. To be eligible for this protection, you must claim Universal Credit by the deadline
date on your Migration Notice letter.

What’s different about Universal Credit?

Universal Credit is different to other allowances and benefits as it is all combined into one monthly
payment into your bank, and it will also include any help you get towards your rent. When you move
onto Universal Credit, you can set up a direct debit to pay your rent direct to the Wrekin Housing
Group. If you are worried about doing this or need advice, please speak to your local Housing Team.
Universal Credit does not include help towards your council tax. You will need to make a separate
claim to your local council for this.
