#TechSheCan, part of National Careers Week, is a campaign that is encouraging women to get into a career in the industry so that the technology of the future represents society equally.
Research shows that just 3% of women say that tech is their first career choice and 27% of females consider technology as a career option (compared to 61% of males).
Lesley, Infrastructure Specialist, has worked in our ICT team for almost thirty years. Previously a PA, Lesley pursued a career in software development after showing a talent for all things tech and wanting to improve her career prospects. The fact that technology is a male dominated field encouraged her to make her mark.

“I love my job; it’s exciting. Every day is different and it keeps me on my toes.”
Lesley also talked about preconceptions people might have of working in IT: “It does take a certain mind set to work with computers; people with an inquisitive nature with a willingness to learn and determination will stand out and soar.”
“It really is the best career for me. I feel privileged to work in IT as it keeps my mind young and helps me engage with younger generations.”
Lynne is a Business Information Analyst who works in our ICT team and has worked for Wrekin for 19 years. Lynne originally trained as a primary school teacher but realised it wasn’t the career for her: “I wanted to get into IT so I started working at as a technical librarian to change my career path. I completed my Masters in Information Management which led to a series of jobs in data warehouse design and management information. I use the wealth of data that I work with to help inform business decisions for the future.”

“People think that working in IT isn’t creative, but it is. Coming up with creative solutions to people’s problems is very satisfying; you really feel like you’ve helped to solve their problems and made their jobs easier.”
“The IT sector needs a variety of people working in it to create a variety of solutions for everyone. It’s always changing and very challenging; it’s a job for life.”
