Wrekin partners with R1 Construction and Telford College to Provide Work Experience Opportunities fo
The Wrekin Housing Group’s commitment to making a difference to people’s lives has provided opportunities to 18 students pursuing careers in the construction industry.
The programme, running from November 2024 to March 2025, will see each student spend two full days on-site at the Webb Crescent development, currently under construction for The Wrekin Housing Group. The initiative is part of the Wrekin Housing Group’s ongoing commitment to deliver social value across communities – with development partners required to provide work experience and apprenticeship opportunities linked to homes that are being built for the housing association.
This real-world experience will enable the students to gain practical insights into the construction process, under the guidance of experienced professionals, complementing the theoretical knowledge gained in their studies.
Jordan Bannister, Site Manager at Webb Crescent for R1, highlighted the significance of the initiative:
“Providing these students with hands-on experience at Webb Crescent is a privilege and a responsibility we take seriously. It's not just about showing them the technical side of construction but also instilling a real appreciation for the teamwork, innovation, and discipline required to succeed in our industry. We’re thrilled to play a part in shaping the future talent of construction and look forward to seeing how these students grow throughout the programme.”
Ange Jones, Work Experience Coordinator at Telford College, added: “We are always seeking new opportunities with employers to help our students get invaluable industry experience.
“We are incredibly proud to work with R1, who are offering a fantastic opportunity for our students to be involved in the construction of local homes, building the skills and knowledge necessary for success in their future careers.”
The Webb Crescent development provides an excellent environment for students to observe and participate in various aspects of construction, including site management, safety protocols, and the application of sustainable building practices. By engaging directly with professionals at R1, the students will gain an understanding of the teamwork, problem-solving, and technical expertise required to succeed in the field.
Gill Price, Social Value Coordinator at Wrekin, concluded:
“We are delighted that young people are getting quality hands-on work experience at our Webb Crescent. At contract stage, we ensure that all our development partners make a firm commitment to deliver social value that benefit our customers and the wider community. It’s great to see that R1 Construction are delivering.”
