Trust on track for 100% tenant safety during eighth Gas Safety Week
Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning, a highly poisonous gas that you can’t see, smell or taste, which can be fatal.
That’s why every year The Wrekin Housing Trust supports Gas Safety Week (17th-23rd September 2018) to continue raising awareness of the importance of taking care of gas appliances and having them regularly checked.
In 2017/18, the Trust’s in-house Gas team gained access to carry out 100% of gas checks in their tenants’ homes and are on track for 100% success rate this year too, ensuring that all tenants remain safe in their homes.
The aim of Gas Safety Week is to get vital safety messages out as far and wide as possible as people start to think about using their heating again for the winter.
The Gas Safe Register estimates that one in four homes in the West Midlands has a dangerous gas appliance. It also states that almost half of the nation’s homes (around 12 million households) were putting themselves at risk by not having a carbon monoxide (CO) detector, but reassuringly 83% had a smoke alarm fitted. The Trust’s Gas team has recently had their procedures audited and accredited by Corgi Technical, a highly-regarded achievement within the sector. Fleur Whittingham, Gas Operations Manager at the Trust said: “The Trust is committed to providing the highest standards of gas safety for all of our customers. The team worked closely with Corgi Technical during the last 12 months to achieve the accreditation, which aligns with ISO9001, ensuring that all of our current procedures are of a robust standard and compliant with gas regulations.”
Earlier this year, the Trust’s Gas team were deserving winners of the Gas Safety Collaboration award at the annual AGSM (Association of Gas Safety Managers) awards for their work to upgrade all gas meters in partnership with Cadent. Chrissie Holmes from CORGI said: “It is an amazing achievement to be selected from the many nominations we received, and we were delighted to be able to present this award to the Trust.”
