Calendar art competition – five top tips for success
Here are five top tips for entering our calendar art competition.
The competition is open to all whether you are an experienced artist or it’s something new and there are no restrictions on media, with entries welcome in all mediums from photography and painting to ceramics and crochet.
1) Does it fit the brief?
This year’s theme is natural therapy and we are looking for artworks inspired by nature to create a calendar that evokes the calming feelings of outdoor space and the natural world. This might be your favourite garden colours or something you discovered when out walking.
2) Would you love it on your wall?
Our judges will be looking for artwork which looks great on everyone’s wall. Think about colour and vibrancy or a subject matter that will make people feel calm and happy.
3) Does it work in landscape?
Our finished calendar will feature the artworks in a landscape format. This means that an image that is wide and short (landscape) will have a better chance of being selected than something tall and narrow (portrait) in composition.
4) Is your photograph big enough?
If you are entering photography into the competition you need to make sure the image is big enough to print out clearly at an A4 size. As a guide the file size needs to be at least 1MB. Images taken through apps like Instagram may have been reduced in size and although they look great on a screen they will look blurred once printed.
5) Does your entry photograph show your artwork at its best?
The judges will only see a photograph of your work so make sure it really shows your work at its best. When you take your photograph:
- Remove any glass frames.
- Make sure the art is well lit; you may find that taking the photograph outside will help keep the image closer in colour to the original.
- If possible use a tripod to help keep your camera or phone still.
- Take lots of photos, then select the clearest one that best represents your piece.
Once you are ready to send your entry, email the photograph along with a few words about your piece, your name and contact details to calendar@wrekin.com.
Good Luck!
