Mobility scooter safety
We know that mobility scooters are a lifeline for many of our customers. However, if they are not used, stored and charged properly they can be a safety risk.
If you use a mobility scooter, it is essential that you follow the following health and safety rules to keep you, your family and your neighbours safe.
- Don’t store your scooter on your escape route or on a communal corridor or staircase, even for short periods of time.
- Don’t charge your scooter overnight or while you sleep.
- Unplug your scooter once it has charged.
- Use a scooter store if your building has one.
- Remove the battery from the scooter if you can when it is not in use.
- Make sure you have a smoke alarm fitted and test it regularly.
- Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and have your scooter serviced regularly.
Store your mobility scooter safely
If mobility scooters are stored near a door or in a communal area, they can block escape routes in the event of a fire. Fires have been caused by charging mobility scooter batteries.
Never charge your scooter in the landings, corridors or staircases.
Charge your battery in the scooter store if your building has one.
If you are concerned about scooter storage where you live, speak to your Retirement Living Co-ordinator or Scheme Manager if you have one. Alternatively, call 01952 217100 or email enquiries@Wrekin.com
