Working Together to Tackle Hoarding – Supporting Customers During National Hoarding Awareness Week

At The Wrekin Housing Group, we’re proud to support Hoarding Awareness Week (12 - 18 May 2025) by highlighting the practical help and tailored support available to customers, their families – and even staff – who may be affected by hoarding behaviour.

Hoarding is often misunderstood. It can be linked to complex mental health challenges such as anxiety, trauma, or loss – and it can affect anyone. That’s why our approach is rooted in compassion, dignity and partnership working.

Our teams regularly support customers facing difficult situations – like the family helped last November, when a contractor raised concerns about the condition of a home due to a build-up of belongings.

Area Manager Sarah Broome, Housing Executive Sue Beech and Kevin Lewis from our Fire Safety Team, arranged a joint visit to ensure the family were safe and supported.

Sarah said:

“It became clear the family were really struggling.

“They had four older children living at home, including one who uses a wheelchair and two with mental health needs. Space was very limited and understandably, it had become overwhelming for them.”

A social worker also attended to support the mother, who was anxious about the visit. It was agreed that the amount of clutter was a potential fire risk, and so the need for customer support and a simple yet effective solution was needed.

A plan was made to begin clearing the hallways to make sure the family could exit the property safely in an emergency.

“It was amazing to see the progress just a few weeks later,” said Kevin.

“The family had made a real effort and the walkways were clear. The Fire Service also followed up with advice and reassurance. It’s not about a ‘quick fix’, but we’re on a journey with them.”

And it’s a journey that’s already making a difference.

The tenant told Sue:

“You visiting has really helped with my mental health and given me a focus. I’ve been able to prioritise and make sure the house is tidier and cleaner, so I feel more positive about being here.”

This is just one example of the work Housing Plus does every day – not just reacting to concerns, but walking alongside customers to achieve positive outcomes.

Could this support help you or someone you know?

Hoarding can impact not only the person experiencing it, but their loved ones, neighbours, and even staff visiting homes. Wrekin staff receive training to recognise when extra support might be needed – and to know how to help in a respectful, non-judgemental way.

As part of our commitment to raising awareness, we’re encouraging customers and colleagues to explore the Clouds End website – a leading organisation supporting people affected by hoarding.

The Community Interest Company (CIC) offers valuable information about hoarding disorder, practical advice for how to talk to someone you’re concerned about, and steps you can take to start making a difference – whether that’s in your own home or someone else’s.
