Your Wrekin: fire safety
We know that fire safety is a big concern for you and your loved one. That's why we take it very seriously.
There are a number of things we do to help keep you safe in your home.
These include:
- Carrying out an annual fire risk assessment on all blocks of flats.
- Commissioning the servicing, maintenance and testing of fire safety systems such as fire alarms, detectors,
warning alerts, emergency lighting, automatic ventilation systems and dry risers. - Carrying out routine block inspections.
- Using competent staff and contractors to undertake fire safety work in your home.
- Using third party accredited fire doors and door sets and ensure that they are
fitted by certificated installers. - Liaising with the local fire and rescue service to ensure they are familiar with properties and the relevant fire
measures. - Keeping residents informed about fire safety and providing relevant and up-to-date safety information.
- Fitting and maintaining fire alarms within your home.
Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility and there are also steps you can take to help keep
you and your neighbours safe.
- Keep flat communal corridors clear - this is crucial because in case of a fire, the corridor is the escape route.
- Don't prop fire doors open - they are there to keep the fire contained, so make sure they stay closed.
- Take care when cooking - unattended cooking is a leading cause of fires.
- Never leave unattended candles burning - it's easy to forget about them, and they can be dangerous. Alternatively, buy a battery powered one instead
- Make sure cigarettes are properly extinguished.
- Don’t put flammable materials in communal store cupboards.
- Don’t keep bottled gas canisters inside your home.
- Take responsibility for any rubbish and make sure that it is disposed of correctly.
- Make sure that mobility scooters, bicycles or other items are not left in corridors or anywhere that could prevent a safe exit from your flat.
- Check that your front door has a closer arm on it and it is working correctly.
- Ensure that you test your smoke alarm weekly.
- Ensure that you know your escape routes in case of an emergency – and make sure everyone who lives in your home knows them too.
- Make sure to read the fire action notices in your block.
- Don't forget to book a "safe and well" visit with the fire service.
